The aim was to produce some documentary family photography for them, as a record of where they are as a family in 2017. It's a great way to capture a family, in a journalistic and documentary way. There's no posing or pretending - it's all just natural photography showing a typical day in the life.

Willoughby and Bertie are super natured children, and we had a lot of fun going for a walk in the nearby woods and building dens. There were snacks and Lego, baths and a few tears. By the time I said goodnight, we'd recorded a little slice of life in the Ray household.

Check out the highlights slideshow above, and some of the stills below. And if you're interested in my photography, there's more information and pricing on the documentary family photography page.

Top Instagram Posts January 2017 http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2017/2/top-instagram-posts-january-2017 Jess and Sam's Christmas Marquee Wedding Photography

So here's the top five Instagram posts from my Documentary Wedding Photography feed from January 2017. I post lots of new pictures on Instagram every month, and it's pretty exciting to see which ones gain the most likes - it's usually not the ones I think! But this one above, from Jess and Sam's Christmas Marquee wedding in Lincolnshire was one I knew would do well. It had been a pretty great party all day - it was only a week before Christmas and everyone was in high sprits. So when Hey Mr Wilson got the tunes going, the dance floor soon filled up.

I've set one flash up directly behind Jess, and another off to my right. So when the dance floor filled with smoke, I knew this setup would provide some great pictures. This is shot on a wide angle lens, and while I was concentrating on Jess and her new husband, her sister danced into view, giving the picture some foreground interest (thanks Cece!).

Laura and John's wedding at St. Michael's, Sunninghill, and Hampton Court House.

Here's one from much earlier in the Summer, back when the light was good and the sun warm! It's Laura arriving at St Michael and All Angels Church in Sunninghill, Berkshire. She's accompanied by her father and has just stopped to greet her daughter and other flower girls. I wanted to make sure I had a good dark background behind Laura, especially as the sun is directly behind her. The shadows from the trees help separate her from the background, and I've taken a low angle to try and keep the background clean. It's a lovely moment, just as the nerves are kicking in before walking down the aisle, and I hope this picture brings back some fond memories fro Laura for many years to come!

Sarah and Martin's wedding at Wasing Park

This silhouette is one of Kim's bridesmaids applying makeup before her wedding to Joe at The Old Mill in Aldermaston. As is often the case with documentary wedding photography, once I find a good background, it's just a matter of time before an interesting picture comes together. Luckily I didn't have to wait too long for this one!

Notley Abbey Wedding

Here's the Mother of the Bride from Ying and Yu's wedding at Burgh House in London. I like the stencils on the glass, placed there by Ying's Mother, as well as the framing from the circular mirror. This image, as well as the silhouette above, featured in my end of year round up post which only used pictures of guests and family members - there were no brides or grooms featured!

Charlotte and MikeCharlotte and MikeGreat Tythe Barn Wedding Photography Lastly, another picture from the end of year post, this one from Charlotte and Mikes marquee wedding up in Nottinghamshire in the Spring. I spotted this little chap during the ceremony, and waited for him to look up over the pews during one of the hymns.

I hope you enjoyed some of my Instagram highlights - do check back again to see what's popular next month. And if you're on Instagram, here's the link to my page where you can keep up with what I'm posting - Paul Rogers Photography Instagram.

Claridge's Wedding Photography http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2017/1/claridges-wedding-photography There's many iconic venues in London, the city is just full of household names. I've photographed at many, either in my capacity as a news photographer at The Times, or more recently as a documentary wedding photographer. Claridge's in Mayfair is just about one of the most well known and highly regarded hotels in the world, and though I'd photographed there many times before, this was the first wedding, and it truly lived up to expectations!

How To Find Your Wedding Photographer

I'll be shooting my 200th wedding some time this year, and with that business foundation comes a very pleasant side effect. And that's client referrals. In the wedding industry, clients often book professionals with little or no previous knowledge of planning such a huge celebration. So it's natural to ask around your friends, who may have been through a similar process, and get some recommendations of companies and professionals they've had dealings with. I've been a photographer for more than two decades, and have a solid network of fellow creative people, many of whom are photographers. One of those, Adam Jacobs, has kindly introduced my work to several friends. So it was fantastic when Adam's friends, Emily and Hugh, booked me for their Claridge's wedding photography.

Claridge's Makes A Stunning London Wedding Venue

The day started with Emily's preparations at Claridge's. She was joined by her parents and sister's family upstairs in the hotel, while the Ballroom was prepared for the Jewish ceremony downstairs. Before the main ceremony in the Ballroom, the bride and groom met in the French Salon for the Bedeken and Ketubah Blessing, while the rest of the guests were seated ready for the main ceremony.

The Ballroom is a pretty impressive space, and the Chuppah looked fabulous in there. The ceremony was followed by a drinks reception before the main meal and Israeli Dancing commenced, back in the Ballroom. This part of a Jewish celebration is always high energy and lively - an absolute pleasure to photograph! Fortunately I was assisted with the lighting by Joan Jellett, who also second shot the rest of the day with me.

I hope you enjoy some of the highlights from our wedding photography at Claridge's, and please do let me know if you're planning a wedding at this amazing London hotel, or anywhere else, and would like me to provide this kind of documentary wedding photography. Christmas Marquee Wedding Photography http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2017/1/christmas-marquee-wedding-photography

Winter Wedding Photography in a Marquee

You never really know what the weather will be like when you're planning for a December wedding, and earlier in the year when Jess and Sam asked me to provide their Christmas marquee wedding photography I was half hoping for a crisp winters day with frost or snow. Of course it was unseasonably warm and quite bright as I drove into the Lincolnshire village of Ropsley to check out the church. Still, much better than an overcast day, and the light definitely gave me something to use, photographically speaking, during Jessica's preparations at her parents home.

Bridal Preparations at Home

The garden had be totally transformed into an impressive marquee, flowing right around the house, and looked set to host an amazing party later that evening. Inside, it was bustling with activity, an excellent scene for my style of documentary wedding photography. Hair, make-up and last minute dress adjustments were all happening amongst the activity in the garden as well as China, the families Hungarian Viszla eyeing up the mouthwatering ham on the dining table!

I soon headed into the village to capture Sam and the guests arriving at the church. Jess arrived bathed in the setting sunlight, greeted by another of the families dogs, before the start of the dusk ceremony. Light in the church was tricky, but atmospheric, like all winter weddings. The latest generation of cameras, like the Canon 5D Mark IV's that I was using can cope incredibly well in such low light, so the twilight 'sparkler run' outside made for some great pictures.

Marquee weddings vary hugely, in size, shape and particularly, light quality. Thankfully this one was superbly lit, with lots of Christmas lights helping. The wedding breakfast featured a superb guest rendition of 'The 12 Days of Christmas' putting everyone in the seasonal spirits for a great party in to the night.

Guests Only. Weddings Without the Bride and Groom http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/12/guests-only-weddings-without-the-bride-and-groom

Music by Animal Island, Licensed by Musicbed

Who thinks wedding photography has become a bit predictable this year?

Boring, even? Sure, the first time you see a teeny tiny couple lost in a massive landscape, it's impressive. Or a backlit couple in profile. Or a couple shot through loads of out of focus lights. Or hand in hand, silhouetted, between fairy lights, having just stepped over a prism and climbing a mountain (because that’s what happens on a wedding day).

"A Man Is Known By The Company He Keeps"

I'm not saying this is poor photography, far from it! The standard of wedding photography just keeps getting better and better. But I have to stop looking at this stuff. It's stifling my creativity seeing the same shots reworked and refined over and over again with different couples. I find myself longing to see an imperfect, unscripted moment, giving me a glimpse of the reality of a wedding day. After all, that’s really what a wedding day is all about, isn’t it? The couples friends, their relationships, the people they surround themselves with. Aesop got it right - “A man is known by the company he keeps”, and it’s the people and the stories of how their lives are intertwined that help define a person, and a couple.

So when I came to put the obligatory end of year blog post together, I couldn’t bring myself to churn out my versions of the pictures you’ve all seen a thousand times already. To be honest, they’re not nearly as spectacular as everyone else’s! I had to look deeper than a set of fashion portraits featuring two people which happened to be taken on the same day they married each other.

I set myself a task:

Summarise my wedding photography in 2016, without showing a Bride or Groom.

Now, that’s not as hard as it sounds. Of course, a lot of what I shoot on the day is totally centred around the Bride and Groom. But Aesop’s quote above drives my philosophy for photographing a wedding. It’s what I concentrate on mostly - showing the characters, the friendships, the atmosphere of the wedding. Watch the Photo-film above, and listen to Cameron’s Dad talking about what’s important to him on the wedding day. OK, so there’s actually seven pictures out of the 113 where you can see a Bride or Groom, but it’s not very obvious, and they’re definitely not the focus of attention in the image.

There’s a lot of children in these pictures, as well as bridesmaids, grandparents, mothers and fathers, and a couple of what could be classed as landscapes. These are the things, as well as a Bride and Groom, that make up a wedding. Without them on the day, it’s just two people getting married. A legally binding agreement, with witnesses. That’s not a wedding. And a load of beautifully lit and well constructed portraits of two people on that day is not wedding photography.

Watch the film above. This is wedding photography.

Best Instagram Wedding Photography 5th Dec 2016 http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/12/best-instagram-wedding-photography-5th-dec-2016 Instagram is great for showing your best wedding photography - it's entirely image led and is really convenient for getting a quick picture fix on your phone during the day. I try to post at least once a day, partly from my back catalog of wedding photography, but also from current edits. Changing my Instagram account to a business one now means that I can instantly see which pictures are most popular amongst my followers. It's really interesting, as a photographer, because it's often the least likely (in my mind) which generate the most likes. Here's my Instagram account.

So, here's the top 5 Instagram wedding photos from last week.

This is Jenny, on the famous staircase at the fabulous St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London. You may remember this as the backdrop to the Spice Girls 'Wannabe' video? It was taken just before Jenny left to marry Paul at Islington Town Hall, and after we'd taken a couple of quick group pictures with her Dad and sister. It's a breathtaking staircase, and while most of my photography is documentary, it's important to take these kind of surroundings into consideration in the photography. If you're interested, here's a little more from their London wedding

Bride on the stairs at the Renaissance Hotel St Pancras LondonJenny and Paul's wedding at Islington Town Hall and The Pepys London

Next is Rhea getting ready at the Alpaga hotel in Megeve, France. I wanted to try and get a sense of where we were - in the heart of the French Alps. But it was a pretty grey day and visibility was poor. There were no classic snow topped mountains in view, but by using the reflection on the glass of her room, I was able to show a little of the background at the same time as the preparations. Here's some more destination wedding photography.

Next is Kim and Joseph sheltering from the rain as they leave the wedding ceremony at The Old Mill in Aldermaston. It was a day of mixed weather with gorgeous strong sunlight and a couple of heavy downpours. Of course there's nothing you can do about the weather on your wedding day, and it doesn't affect the way I photograph a wedding too much - it's just another characteristic of the day that needs to be seen in the pictures!

Kim and Joe's wedding at The Old Barn in Aldermaston

I love backlight during the brides preparations, especially with a veil on the wedding dress. Of course you really need a dark background to make the most of the light, and I would mostly present an image like this in black and white. This shot of Jade was taken at Rivervale Barn where there's great window light from both sides of the room, making this kind of shot possible.

Lastly, a great reaction picture from Emma and Steve's wedding in Essex earlier in the Summer. It's a great moment, the kind of bread and butter image that the best documentary wedding photographers are always able to find, at every wedding. It's just a case of keeping aware of whats going on around you. And following the loudest laugh!

Elegant London Wedding Venues

Lauren and Alex had planned a classically London wedding, starting with a ceremony at The Temple Church where Alex was once a member of the fabulous choir, and finishing with the wedding party at One Whitehall Place, an elegant Grade II listed wedding venue at the heart of London. One of the things that makes Documentary Wedding Photography so challenging as a photographer is to be able to convey a little of the sense of location throughout the wedding day. There's often a link to the venues chosen by a couple for their wedding, knowing that is the key to be able to provide meaningful, story-telling photography.

The Temple Church

Before we got to the ceremony, I headed off to South London to photograph the final stages of Lauren's preparations, while Joan headed over to photograph the groomsmen getting ready. We both met back at The Temple Church a couple of hours later to photograph the guests arriving at this wonderful church, steeped in history. The link to the church here is that Alex had once sung with the choir, and became Head Chorister. The acoustics in the church are superb, partly down to it's design which recalls the circular Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It was in fact built by the Knights Templar, the monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem in the 12th century.

Documentary Wedding Photography - Natural and Unposed

The circular design gave Joan a superb vantage point to photograph Lauren's arrival, and having two photographers allowed us to find lots of great angles during the wedding ceremony. It also meant that while we spent ten minutes after the ceremony taking some formal family group photos, we could continue to get some great documentary images of the guests.

After the wedding, we all made the short walk over to One Whitehall Place where the wedding reception and party was taking place. It's another superb London location, with great architecture, allowing for interesting compositions. After the meal and some entertaining speeches in the Gladstone Library, the party began in the Reading and Writing Room, where our coverage ended as the night was finishing.

An Historic Barn Venue in London

As wedding venues go, The Great Barn in Ruislip is impressive, with charm, history and a great location for London based couples. It's part of a medieval farm complex in West London dating back to the 13th century. It was still being used as a farm as recently as the 1930's, before being gifted to the Ruislip Village Trust and then the District Council, with a stipulation that it should only be used as a public hall. Following a Lottery funded renovation in 2007, it's now licensed to hold weddings, which brings us to 2016 when Sundeep and Matt celebrated their wedding with family and friends.

A Beard Trim Before The Wedding

But before I got to start photographing at the Great Barn, Ruislip, I met the grooms at Pall Mall barbers in Fitzrovia, London where they were both having their beards trimmed before the wedding ceremony. The basement was quite tight for space, but it made some great pictures and a nice start point for the wedding photography. The guys then moved on to their home to finish their preparations before heading over to The Great Barn where guests had started to arrive.

The Great Barn has some beautiful pockets of light and I explored these fully as the wedding guests arrived. It's a pretty big space - perfect for the kind of documentary wedding photography I specialise in. There was plenty to photograph with Sundeep's Indian family and friends giving me lots of colourful outfits to photograph.

Lucky Timing For A Rainbow

Like a lot of same sex wedding ceremonies, both grooms walked into the ceremony together. The civil ceremony was short and before long everyone had streamed outside into the Autumn sunshine for the start of the reception. The threatening clouds kept at bay for most of the drinks reception, with a shower starting just as everyone moved in for the wedding breakfast. Which was a bit lucky for me, as a rainbow briefly appeared just as we started some quick portraits. Usually that wouldn't excite me too much, but as the rainbow flag is the symbol for the LGBT movement, it felt right, and I was pleased to be able to get it into the portraits before it disappeared!

Speeches and a fabulous dance routine by Matt's family followed the wedding breakfast, before The Cassettes took to the stage and got everyone on the dance floor.

A Beautiful Hampshire Wedding

I knew this Lainston House wedding would be a great day to photograph when Veronica and Ilia first made contact to see if I was available. They knew roughly when they wanted to get married, and started making plans around my availability. Rare though this is, it still blows me away when couples place photography so high up their list that the venue and date are only decided upon after the photographers date is set. Things worked out, and I was booked for their Lainston House wedding photography.

Perfectly Planned Wedding

Another reason I knew this would be a special day, is because they commissioned superb wedding planning company Louise Perry Weddings to organise the whole affair. I'd previously worked with Louise and Natalie on Hannah and Simon's Harpenden wedding photography a couple off years ago, and knew what a thoroughly professional service they provide. This Lainston House wedding was of course no exception, and the whole day ran smoothly and elegantly, with only one exception.

Eric the Owl

And that was Eric the Owl. Eric was booked to deliver the rings to Ilia during the outdoor ceremony. At the appropriate time in the ceremony, Ilia produced a professional looking leather glove and turned back down the aisle where Eric and his handler had appeared. After a little coaxing, Eric took flight and for the first few seconds all looked promising. Then, halfway down the aisle, Eric decided to take a detour, and shot up to the top of a tree, taking the essential wedding rings with him!

Plan B involved some hastily found substitute rings so the ceremony continued, while Eric looked on from 30 foot above the proceedings.

Of course the rest of the day went without a hitch, and my coverage continued through to the dancing in the evening. Scroll down for some of my favourite images from the day. And if you're interested in some Lainston House wedding photography, please get in touch. o

Woodland Wedding Photography at Wasing Park

Wasing Park is a favourite venue for me to photograph at - it's superbly run by an expert wedding team, and always makes for a fun day with stunning photography. So I was pretty excited at the prospect of photographing there again when Vicky and Matt got in touch about their early Autumn wedding. But this was to be a little different. They'd booked the superb woodland wedding venue, run by Wasing Park. It was a surprise to me to learn that this fabulous wedding location even existed - set amongst some magical ancient woodland, it's absolutely perfect for a festival style of outdoor wedding.

A Festival Atmosphere in the Forest

And that's exactly what Vicky and Matt had in mind, when planning the wedding. Incidentally, almost all of their plans were made by phone and over the internet, as they researched and planned their woodland wedding from their home in the Middle East. Which made the day even more incredible - the attention to detail and fantastic vibe during the day was solely down to the plans they'd made over the previous months. All those details and such a brilliant atmosphere not only made it a unique forest wedding for their guests to enjoy, but it made my job of providing the woodland wedding photography such an easy task.

Ceremony in the Secret Walled Garden

The timings for this wedding celebration were a little different to normal. Vicky had her heart set on an evening ceremony, leading straight into the partying. So by early afternoon, the guests had all arrived at the woodland venue, where there was a music stage, a fire pit and tipis amongst the pine trees. The Bride and Groom spent time greeting everyone before the band got everyone dancing to the Ceilidh at the music stage. Before long, Vicky had headed over to the Bothy, a nearby cottage where she could get dressed and prepare for the outdoor ceremony which was taking place in the nearby secret walled garden. The light was challenging during the ceremony, but made some great documentary photography before everyone headed back down to the woods for the rest of the partying.

Here's a small selection of some of my favourite pictures from the day. You can see even more by watching the preview slideshow. A Wedding Day Full of Fun, Colour and Seafood

This was always going to be a fun wedding to photograph! Vicky and Eddie are a fantastic, fun loving couple from Poole in Dorset, and had planned an amazing wedding day culminating in a great party at one of the UK's best seafood restaurants - Shell Bay in Studland, Dorset. But before we even got to the church, it was clear that I was going to have to keep my wits about me to capture just a fraction of the atmosphere and characters present at their wedding.

Starting at the Sandbanks Hotel, the guys were already in the bar when I arrived. There was a strong colour theme present throughout the day, starting with multi-coloured cravats, coupled with another key ingredient of the wedding celebrations - alcohol! A short time later I was amongst the mayhem of a house full of bridesmaids and family members helping Vicky get ready before the ceremony. I love a busy house for the preparations - as a documentary wedding photographer theres always so much to photograph, and this was no exception.

Expect the Unexpected, and Go With the Flow

Now, Vicky's the kind of Bride who has detailed plans in the run up to the wedding, then goes with the flow during the day itself. Some things are just out of your control, and it takes a special kind of person to keep smiling when plans don't turn out as expected. So when the forecasted rain arrived, no problem. We were hopeful for some clear patches later in the day so we could take advantage of the nearby beach for some portraits. When the double decker bus didn't turn up, it really could have upset lesser brides. But the wedding party just altered the plans, cars were summoned, and everyone made it to the church on time!

By the time the ceremony had finished, the bus had arrived and was ready to whisk the first group of guests over to the chain ferry to nearby Shell Bay. But not until we'd photographed the balloon release - some really bright colours to lift everyone's spirits as the overcast sky loomed. Once at the ferry terminal, there were lots of car honks and congratulations from well-wishing members of the public before we boarded to the short hop across the channel and quick walk over to Shell Bay Restaurant.

We did manage a few portraits down on the beach before the evening party kicked off with music, dancing and a Vodka Luge!

Cavalry and Guards Club

Don't forget to check out even more pictures from the Slideshow at the bottom of the page.

Natalie and Chris asked me to provide their Kensington Palace wedding photography at the start of the year, and it's fair to say that I've been looking forward to photographing this wedding all year. As an editorial photographer, I have photographed at the Palace before, so I knew how spectacular the buildings and grounds were. And I knew that they both placed a high value on documentary wedding photography, letting me tell the story of their wedding day without posing or staging pictures.

My coverage started with Natalie's preparations at the Cavalry and Guards Club, a short distance from Kensington Palace. It was a fitting start to the day, with Chris being a Captain in the British Army. With one eye on the threatening rain, I enjoyed photographing Natalie with her Mum and bridesmaids - there was some great light and moments to capture there before I headed over to St Mary Abbot's Church in Kensington.

High Street Kensington Church Ceremony

It's a beautiful church, in the heart of Kensington, and full of opportunity for great story telling photography! Having room to move around in such a large church lets me find great angles and wait for moments to happen. After the ceremony, Natalie and Chris walked under the Guard of Honour, leading the guests on a  short walk through Kensington Park, over to the Palace for the drinks reception.

Kensington Palace Orangery

I knew the approaching rain wasn't far away, but there was enough time for the guests to enjoy some of the stunning gardens before heading into the Orangery for the wedding breakfast. We managed to get some portraits in the Palace at the Kings Grand Stairway, before heading back for the First Dance and the start of a great party.

I've selected a small number of images below, that tell the story of the day, and there's even more pictures from Natalie and Chris' wedding in the slideshow at the bottom of the page.

Tithe Barn Wedding Photography http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/8/tithe-barn-wedding-photography Tithe Barn Wedding PhotographyTithe Barn Wedding Photography in Petersfield Hampshire Tithe Barn Wedding Photography - It's Not Really A Job

Wedding photography for me isn't really a job. I know it's a bit of a cliche to say stuff like that - I've been passionate about photography since I was three etc etc. Whilst I wasn't born clutching a Leica, I do really love photography, and love the way I work as a documentary wedding photographer. Quietly recording the day in a couple's life that is sure to be the most significant of their lives together. And it's true - if you love the job you do, you'll never end up doing a days work in your life!

So it was a real joy when Laura approached me to photograph her wedding. Because I already knew that she places an equally high value on photography. Laura had been following my work for some time, and I had enjoyed seeing some of her photography on Facebook and Twitter, so when she told me she was getting married, it was great to be her first choice as wedding photographer.

South Downs National Park Barn Venue

Laura and Dan had chosen The Tithe Barn near Petersfield in Hampshire for their wedding venue. I'm lucky enough to be commissioned to photograph weddings all over the UK and sometimes abroad, and whilst I had not photographed at The Tithe Barn, it looked like a pretty special place. Set in the South Downs National Park, it's a beautiful wedding venue surrounded by some of the finest English countryside in the South East.

My days coverage started over at Laura's parents house where she and the bridesmaids were getting ready. There was a fun, but involved game of Scrabble in progress when I arrived, and a nice relaxed atmosphere at the house. From the start, I had one eye on the weather, though not in the usual sense. Laura works for the Met Office and BBC Weather Centre as a weather forecaster and presenter, so knowing that weather was important to her, I wanted to try and incorporate that into the photography. Predictably, the weather on the day was entirely unusual, presenting very few photo opportunities! Fifteen degrees and a steady breeze of 15km/h makes for a lovely Spring day for a wedding, but no dramatic weather pictures!

Book Me For Your Tithe Barn Wedding Photograpy?

I joined Dan and the guests at the Tithe Barn for the wedding ceremony. It's a spacious venue, and whilst the interior lighting is challenging, especially where the ceremony is held, there were some great documentary moments to capture.

Here's a selection of my favourite images from the wedding day. If you're looking for a barn venue in the South East, or any other venue really, and like my unobtrusive approach to photographing a wedding, please get in touch to check my availability. I'd love to provide your Tithe Barn wedding photography, or any other venue! Some other Hampshire weddings you might enjoy - Froyle Park wedding photography or another Barn location in Hampshire.

Notley Abbey Wedding http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/7/notley-abbey-wedding Notley Abbey WeddingNotley Abbey Wedding

Historic Notley Abbey

Anyone planning a Notley Abbey Wedding has something quite specific in mind. They're looking for an elegant, historic country setting. Somewhere with a sense of past, but capable of hosting an amazing celebration for their family and friends. Surrounded by idyllic English countryside, yet within easy access of an International centre such as London. Well, Bijou's Notley Abbey provides just such a wedding venue. On the border of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, this historic country mansion was the perfect setting for Zoe and Robert's early Summer marriage.

A Great Wedding Celebration

It was to be a bit of an International gathering, with Robert's Dutch family mixing with friends from America as well as a gathering of their English friends. The subtle orange references didn't go unmissed in the photography either. Notley Abbey is a single setting wedding venue, which meant that everything from the bridal preparations, the wedding ceremony through to the wedding breakfast and first dance was on site - no need for any transport once the guests had arrived.

Superb Natural Light for the Marriage

It was a bright and clear April day, and the light during Zoe's preparations was great, giving me lots of opportunity for interesting documentary photography compositions. The ceremony itself was held downstairs in the Abbot's Hall, the main room in the original house, with an airy feel from the high ceiling and oak beams. Windows at both ends of the room mean that there's great natural light throughout - something all wedding photographers enjoy!

Following the wedding ceremony, the guests headed out into the well kept gardens where we did the group photographs and portraits of Zoe and Robert before the wedding breakfast in the Monks Refectory. Families at Weddings http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/7/families-at-weddings Families at weddingsBenedikt and Carolin's wedding

Of course I spend a lot of time watching and photographing the Bride and Groom. But the real importance, I believe, of wedding photography, is to act as a way for everyone at the wedding to travel back in time, back to that day. Memories fade, and recollection is clouded. Photography has an ability to engender details and feelings that have faded. That's why I spend almost as much time watching the family and friends. Making sure I capture the gestures, trying to interpret relationships and making the kind of image here, that will hopefully be a part of this little girls memory of Kate and Jonny's wedding day.

Tipi Tents in the Oxfordshire Countryside

A church wedding ceremony, followed by the reception in a wedding marquee in Oxfordshire countryside. This always promised to be a fabulous day with lots of opportunity for some great wedding photojournalism! And that began at the Boyers Arms in the beautiful Oxfordshire village of Radley, the setting for the days celebrations. I met Graham and the groomsmen there, for a swift pint to steady the nerves (theirs, not mine!). It's great that I can include some coverage of the groomsmen before photographing the Bride for her preparations - it adds another element to the finished set of pictures.

Before joining Susie and her bridesmaids, I swung by her fathers farm where the wedding marquee company were putting the finishing touches to the collection of marquees that would provide the venue for the wedding breakfast after the marriage. It was a beautiful sight, seeing Tipi tents amongst the Oxfordshire countryside - so with one eye on the weather, I headed on to start my photography of the brides preparations.

Respectful Photography in Church

Susie's hair and makeup were pretty much finished, so it wasn't long before myself and the bridesmaids headed over to St James The Great church in Radley for the wedding ceremony. It was unfortunate that Reverend Pam had made a blanket ban on photography from anywhere but the very back of the church. I'm a documentary photographer and never use flash or loud cameras during a ceremony. I respect the ceremony and the guests and want the couple's ceremony to be totally unaffected by the photography. It's a shame then that Susie and Graham will never have a picture they requested of Susie walking down the aisle looking past a nervous Graham. Or any quality photography from the actual marriage.

So it's lucky that my coverage from the rest of their wedding day is so complete, hopefully bringing back some brilliant memories from their St Georges Day wedding.

Wedding Marquee in Oxfordshire

On to the wedding marquee back at the farm, and the weather was holding out, though a little blustery. Having the open Oxfordshire fields meant that my coverage was fairly varied, being able to follow the laughter outside the marquee and explore both inside and out during the reception. For the warmer months, especially if you have the space, a marquee wedding can provide the perfect venue for your celebrations. Check out a few more marquee weddings I've photographed including this great Winter Marquee Wedding, a Summer marquee wedding in Essex and this other Oxfordshire marquee wedding. And here's some Christmas Marquee Wedding Photography too.

Last Day At Home Before Your Wedding http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/6/last-day-at-home-before-your-wedding Charlotte and Anthony's wedding at Dormansland and Mountains Country House, Hildenborough, Kent.

"My first Valentines card. I was the only one in the class to get one from him. At least, I think it was him, everyones writing looked the same when we were ten. Anyway, I kept it. It's in that basket along with the mix tape Anthony made me when we first got together. I remember wondering if I could ever marry someone who only wore checked shirts and sneezed twice when the sun came out. Still, anyone who starts a tape with Mark Knopfler's Local Hero has to be worth getting to know better!

Oh, Eyore. You've always been there for me, even through that dreadful Summer job cleaning tents in France.

I can't believe I kept that bottle of Malibu. That night after we'd finished 'A' levels.... Becky's scar never really faded, and I know she still can't stomach the smell of coconuts.

I'll have to clear some of this out after we get back from honeymoon, now that Mum and Dad have got the house on the market. Downsizing to that nice little cottage in the Loire. I'm going to miss this place.

At least I've got the memories..."

* Apologies to Charlotte, who probably had none of these thoughts. Though she definitely wouldn't have, if she'd been getting ready at the five star country hotel down the road.

Weddings Are All The Same, Aren't They? http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/6/weddings-are-all-the-same-arent-they

They are really. Sometimes the prep is at home, sometimes in a hotel. Ceremony in a church, sometimes great light, occasionally banished to the back. Champagne reception, family pictures, speeches, meal and dance.

But it's the little variations that form the distinctions from one wedding to the next. Like the clumps in the early universe, moments after the Big Bang that became the stars, planets and galaxies, and us. That's where the interest lies. That's what makes me crawl around on the floor of a tipi in Oxfordshire, in my suit, when I've seen one of those variations. One of those little details, that together with all the other details separate Susie and Graham's wedding from any other wedding thats ever been, since the beginning of time. That little clump of a field, stuck to the bottom of a three inch heel, that's what I get excited about. That's what this wedding is.

Award Winning Images - WPJA 2016 Q1 Contest http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/6/award-winning-images---wpja-2016-q1-contest The Bell at Ticehurst Wedding Photography

I'm delighted to have had two more images awarded in the latest WPJA contest. The WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association) is an American based International organisation that concentrates on non-staged, un-posed, real, story-telling images. Exactly what my photography is about, which is why it means so much to me!

The one above is from Katie and Simon's wedding at The Bell in Ticehurst - a beautifully eccentric English pub in East Sussex. Here's what the judges said about this photo:

"Wedding days contain so much emotion and so many characters…there are infinite opportunities to make images that capture the feeling of the day. What it takes is a skilled eye for framing, an anticipation of what may come, and the forethought to be in the right place at the right time. This image has it all."

The second image to win an award is this one below from Iain and Kristy's Barn Wedding at Rivervale Barn in Hampshire. It's got to be one of my all time favourite pictures from the meal.

Barn Wedding Photography - Kristy and Iain at Rivervale Barn in Hampshire

It's shot from a balcony at the barn, on a 135mm lens. I wanted to compress the perspective a little and include the 'Just Married' banner along with some of the wedding guests in the foreground. I lined the shot up just as the venue staff were pouring the wine. I took 4 or 5 frames as the couple leaned in for a kiss, just as one of the waitresses walked past. The precise moment of the kiss is obscured by the waitress, but I think this moment before they actually kiss is a stronger image.

Here's what the judges said about this photo:

"Another example of great seeing by the photographer. Each little fraction of the photo has its own energy and story, with the bride and groom in the middle caught at the perfect moment. Love this photo."

If you're planning your wedding and appreciate these kind on natural, un-posed photos, fill in this form to check your date now.

Froyle Park Wedding Photography http://www.rogerspictures.com/blog/2016/6/froyle-park-wedding-photography Froyle Park wedding photographyFroyle Park wedding photography by Paul Rogers

An Indian Wedding at Froyle Park

The Froyle Park wedding photography that you see here was the third and final part of my photographing Sheena and Jason's fabulous Indian wedding celebrations. The week had started with a civil ceremony at Home House in London, a classic London club house with understated style and elegance, perfect for a smaller family celebration and meal. After that I photographed the Mehndi at Sheena's parents house in North London, and then onto the fabulous Froyle Park, a fantastic Jacobean manor house dating back to 1620. It was to be the perfect setting for the large Indian ceremony and celebration that was planned, with a ballroom, extensive grounds and an oak panelled Great Hall.

Colourful wedding ceremony

My coverage began with Sheena's preparations at Froyle Park, whilst my colleague Joan caught up with Jason and the guys. The ceremony got underway with the Jaan procession, where the groom's family are welcomed by the bride's family. There was lots of enthusiastic singing and dancing from Jason and his family. After lunch came the Pokhnu ceremony in the Ballroom leading to Sheena's arrival for the main part of the marriage in the Mandap.

Once the ceremony was finished, the guests moved out into the sunshine for ice cream while we did some very quick family group pictures. The black tie evening celebrations began in the Great Hall where there was some fabulous window light, perfect for my style of documentary wedding photography, before moving back to the ballroom for the dinner and speeches. We photographed the first dance and some of the partying before saying goodnight to the newly weds.
