Following last week’s post showing some of the unpublished portraits shot for The Times, here’s a few more from the John Hurt shoot in Norwich last month. I’d met him at Norwich University of the Arts, where he is Chancellor, before an interview he gave to Stephanie Marsh where he was supposed to be talking about his role as a vampire in Only Lovers Left Alive. You can read more from the interview here.
He was a charming subject, and quite patient while I chose a location and set up the lighting. It was even his suggestion that I shoot through the window into the gallery – I don’t think this quite works, but if I’d had a little more time it could have. Lighting wise, I’ve used a speedlite with a softbox, fairly close to the subject to give me some hard fall off of the light. I’ve side lit him on a couple of the frames, moving the second light around behind him to make a bit more of his great hair style.
My favourite is the black and white conversion at the end. Let me know which you think works best in the comments.
Here’s more of my editorial work, shot for The Times.
